Let’s celebrate ‘Giving Tuesday’
Urban Indians have typically been quick in emulating everything that the West offers. From American burgers and fries to French Macarons that you can indulge in every other eatery and patisserie in Mumbai.
An interesting aping of the West has also come about in the festival section. Urban Indians now celebrate Halloween with as much fervour as Holi, Thanksgiving and Easter see as many lights lit up as seen on Diwali and at the risk of exaggeration, I may have noticed more “Happy 4th of July” posts on Instagram than on 15th of August. Last but not the least, Indians have taken to Valentine’s day, like a duck takes to water.
While I am superbly happy with India importing festivals from all over the world, I have only one complaint. There’s one Day that feels frightfully left out amidst this happy chaos of festivals and celebratory days – GIVING TUESDAY.
‘Giving Tuesday’ is a global generosity movement, that gives people the power to transform their communities and the world by dedicating a day to commit a deed of kindness – and Indians, we’re late to the party!
The initiative was officially founded by the 92nd Street Y in partnership with the United Nations Foundation, as a response to commercialisation and consumerism in the post-Thanksgiving season. The date range is November 27 to December 3, and is always five days after the Thanksgiving holiday.
Whether it’s making someone smile, helping a neighbour or a stranger out, giving some of what we have to those who need our help, every act of generosity counts and everyone has something to give.
‘Giving Tuesday’ helps build a more just and generous world by encouraging people to commit an act of kindness and help someone in need.
Non-profits work tirelessly throughout the year to change lives of people coming from challenging backgrounds. ‘Giving Tuesday’ encourages people to devote this day to help these non-profits achieve their goals and help make the world a better place.
Here’s how you can celebrate #GivingTuesdayWithShareALittle-
ShareALittle is a non-profit helping raise funds for the hearing-impaired children at EAR Society.
EAR Society is a school that teaches oral communication with the conviction that given early and appropriate education, hearing impaired children can learn to communicate effectively and become contributing citizens of mainstream society.
Because of EAR Society, 500 children have been integrated into mainstream schools.
The pandemic has forced the hearing-impaired children at EAR Society to study from home, however they lack the resources to purchase online learning devices.
This ‘Giving Tuesday’, contribute towards the EAR Society fundraiser, which will enable us to buy digital tabs for the children at EAR Society.
